Personal Holiness in Times of Temptation
Holiness: How to Get There From Here
Holiness: How to Get There From Here
· If you were ask, pick three words that best describe you?
· We mistaken holiness with status like a minister, preacher, missionary, monk, angel or a martyr
Being holy is becoming just like Jesus.
God has a program of character development for each one of us. He wants others to look at our lives and say, “He walks with God, for he lives like Christ.” Erwin W. Lutzer
Four lesssons:
· What is Holiness?
· What is Temptation?
· The biggest Temptations
· Overcoming Temptation
I. Biblical definition of holiness
1 Pet. 1:15-16
“But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’”
1.Holiness (Heb and Greek) – the word “holy” literarlly means to separate
2.Holiness requires from the secular to the sacred
3.All Christins are commanded to be holy in all your conduct
How little people know who think that holiness is dull. When one meets the real thing,…it is irresistible. C.S. Lewis Letters to an American Lady
Three different ways to think of holiness:
· God’s view of holiness
· Personal view of holiness
· My behavior in expression of holiness
II. Three stages of holiness
Separation unto God in God’s mind
a.Exodus, Moses walking along and seeing the burning bush and the voice speaking, you walk on “holy ground.” Was there a line that says, holy. Think of it, it was holy when God was speaking, but it wasn’t holy after God spoke. What made it holy? In God’s mind it was holy. “The ‘Holy Ground’ was in God’s mind.
1 Cor. 1:2, “To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who aresanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours.” Are those people really saints? Because in the book they are immoral and do not live like saints.
All Christians have been separated in God’s Mind and are holy.
i. In his mind, God has reclassified you. You were enemies, now reconciled. You were a sinner, now a saint.
A. The first stage: Salvation.
The first stage of personal holiness is your salvation through trust in Christ’s sacrifice.
You are not a saint for what people tell you, you are a saint because of what God tells you.
B. The second stage: Presentation
Romans 12:1, “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
· God is asking you to present yourself to God. This is not God’s mind, this is “your” mind. Myself to Him.
· In my life, I will separate my life to God.
Luke 2:
· The “presentation of Jesus” was in his parent’s mind.
The “sacrifice” here is a dead animal, where the dead is more precious than the living. While you are living, be a sacrifice to me.
All Christians can become fully committed to Christ. Will you respond back to God.
Presentation of your life to God through gratitude for His love and mercy
Romans 1-11, it presents everything that God did. In ch. 12, it asks what about you? Will you respond?
C.The third stage: Transformation
2 Timothy 2:19b, 21-22, Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart form iniquity….if anyone cleanses himself…he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. Flee also youthful lusts, but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
1. Practical holiness is a lifelong process of cleansing yourself from sin and pursuing righteousness.
2. Seek personal holiness “with those who call on the name of the Lord out of a pure heart. You do this with others, not only by yourself.
3. Your transformation into the image of Christ through complete obedience
The most important thought I ever had was that of my individual responsibility to God. Daniel Webster
III. Process of Holiness
2 Cor. 7:1, Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and sprit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
When you believe, it happens one time
When you present, it happens there one time
From that point on, you got to keep working on holiness.
